First WGC Event Opens Today

The second tournament of a two-week Asia swing will take place this week in China. The HSBC Champions is the first WGC event of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season. As a guaranteed-money, small-field event, this one brings out the big boys.

This tournament always has a terrific field, especially for the fall swing, and this week is no different. Dustin Johnson and Rory Mcilroy will be there. So will Rickie Fowler and Adam Scott.

The event gets several Ryder Cup golfers in their first event in nearly a month, Justin Thomas coming off a win last week and studs like Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who played the CIMB Classic last week.

We've seen things like Dustin Johnson banging one off the flagstick in the final round, Bubba Watson sinking a bunker shot on the final hole to get in a playoff and Patrick Reed uttering an expletive which was caught on camera.

One underlying story that people might not know that much about is Rory McIlroy's equipment change. Chris Solomon of No Laying Up first reported it, and it was confirmed this week. McIlroy has put the TaylorMade M2 driver and 3-wood in his bag for this event.

Russell Knox won last year. PGA Tour Player of the Year won in China in 2013.
