Rickie Fowler Opens Early Lead at Houston Open

It clearly pained Rickie Fowler to miss the WGC-Dell Match Play last week, but he did it in the name of preparing properly for the 2017 Masters. It looks right now like that was a wise decision.

Fowler got off to a blazing start on Thursday at the Shell Houston Open with an 8-under 64 that included a near-ace at his final hole. Fowler started on the back nine at the Houston Open and made four birdies in his first five holes.

Then the back nine highlight was this shot on the ninth hole.

Fowler putted well enough to be in the top 10 of the field, but he really made hay off the tee and with his approach shots. He was top five in the field in those categories and produced a clean, bogey-free scorecard.

Now Fowler, who shot a personal best by four strokes in 21 total rounds at the Houston Open, will try to back up his Honda Classic win from earlier in the season with another one before heading to Augusta National for the 81st Masters.

It really is all about next week for Fowler and other stars. This week is a tune-up for the main event. A win would be nice, of course, but it would merely be a bonus for him as he looks for his first major championship at Augusta National.
