Monticello Walks Off on St. Joseph-Ogden With Late Rally

Jeffry Wileaver’s walk off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning sent Monticello past St. Jospeh-Ogden in walk-off fashion, 7-6 Thursday afternoon from Monticello High School in Okaw Valley boys baseball action.

Trailing 6-3, the Sages left off the seventh inning by reaching base on back-to-back errors against starter Colton Hale. Hale was then lifted for Austin Cain who got Konnor Bundy to ground into a fielders choice, when Jaden Miller at third base tagged out lead baserunner Mitch Rhoades.

With one away, Alex Marquardt walked, loading the bases. A sac-fly RBI by Luke Stokowski brought a run in for a 6-4 deficit. Mitch Carr then sent a drive over the head of centerfielder Mason Coon and scored two runs.

With Carr at second and two outs, Wileaver laced a single to left field. The throw in was cut off for a relay that was off-line and allowed Carr to score standing and the Sages celebrated down the first base line.

Stokowski started for the Sages on the mound but was knocked around for six runs on on seven hits, striking out two and walking zero.

Cam Wittig relieved Stokowski with six shutout innings, allowing two hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

Cain took the loss for St. Joe.

The Spartans drop to 7-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Okaw Valley conference.

The Sages improve to 8-2 on the year and are 1-1.
