Monticello Stymies St. Joe-Ogden

The Monticello Sages used a big second quarter effort to get by St. Joseph-Ogden 53-37 in a crucial Illini Prairie Conference boys basketball game Tuesday night from St. Joseph-Ogden High School.

 

The Sages used a stellar defensive effort to turn a 14-13 deficit into a 30-19 advantage at the break.

 

Monticello opened the quarter with 11 straight points and the Spartans went 5:06 without a field goal.

 

Calvin Fisher led all scorers with 19 points. Luke Stokowski had a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds and Johnny Dawson chipped in with 10 points.

 

The Sages shot 60-percent from the floor on 24-60 shooting, including 10-for-18 in the second half and went 8-for-11 in the second quarter.

 

Monticello won the battle of the boards 27-20 and turned nine offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points. They also turned the Spartans over 13 times for 14 points off turnovers.

 

The Sages improve to 4-0 in the Illini Prairie Conference and are 15-1 overall.

 

The Spartans drop to 20-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.

The Sages then turn around on Saturday and head to Quincy for matchup with Quincy Notre Dame.
