GIRLS SOFTBALL: Olympia Pulls Away Late in Monticello

The Olympia Lady Spartans scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away late in an 11-3 win over Monticello in Illini Prairie Conference girls softball action from a wet Monticello High School Thursday afternoon.

Rain fell the entire game on an afternoon when almost every sporting event in central Illinois was postponed.

Both teams pushed across a run in the first. The Lady Spartans added two runs in the second and another in the third to open up a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Miranda Fogel hit a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 4-3 but that would be as close as the Lady Sages would get but not without opportunities.

After Fogel's home run, Avery Oberheim popped out to centerfield and the next three Lady Sages reached base. Lizzie Stiverson hit a bullet to left field right into the mitt of Bea Morrow and the fly ball was shallow enough to keep the runner at third. Then Hannah Uebinger grounded to second to end the threat.

In the fifth inning the Lady Sages loaded the bases with only one out but Kaelyn Leverson struck out Josie Nelson and Addison Wichus grounded out to second to end the rally.

Leverson went the distance for Olympia, allowing three runs on ten hits, walked six and struck out four.

Fogel led Monticello, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Renni Fultz finished 2-for-4 with a double and Oberheim drove in a run for the Lady Sages.

Syndey Usherwood finished 1-for-4 but drove in two runs and scored another run. Leverson finished 2-for-4 with a run, Kennedy Smith and Colby Bart scored two runs, doubled and were hit by a pitch.

The Lady Spartans improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the Illini Prairie Conference. The Lady Sages drop to 4-5 overall and are 0-1 in the Illini Prairie.
