Cardinals Win; Cubs, Sox Lose Sunday

Adam Wainwright pitched six sharp innings as the Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep by beating the San Diego Padres 4-1.

The 37-year-old gave up one run and five hits. He struck out nine and didn't issue a walk while throwing 100 pitches.

Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong drove in two runs.

Jordan Hicks recorded four outs for his first save in two chances. He struck out Manny Machado with a runner on to end the eighth.

DeJong drove in a pair of runs with a fourth-inning double off Matt Strahm (0-2). Matt Carpenter walked and Paul Goldschmidt reached when left fielder Hunter Renfroe lost the ball in the sun. Renfroe was given an error on the play.

Carpenter added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the seventh. Kolten Wong and Jose Martinez began the inning with back-to-back singles.

Wong pushed the lead to 4-1 with an infield single in the eighth.

Miles Mikolas (0-1, 7.20) will face LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-0, 2.08) in the first of a four-game set in St. Louis on Monday.

Christian Yelich homered and drove in three, Josh Hader completed an eight-out save and the Brewers beat the Cubs 4-2 to take two of three in the series.

The Cubs lost for the seventh time in eight games, dropping to 2-7 ahead of their home opener Monday.

Chicago threatened with two baserunners in the seventh inning, but a well-rested Hader entered to clean up that mess and cruised from there. The hard-throwing left-hander struck out three over 2 2/3 perfect innings, throwing 36 pitches for his fifth save. He hadn't pitched since Tuesday against Cincinnati.

Zach Davies (1-0) pitched effectively into the sixth, helping Milwaukee win for the seventh time in eight games.

Willson Contreras' two-run homer in the sixth against Davies was unearned, and that was all Chicago could muster at the plate. Davies pitched 5 2/3 innings of five-hit ball.

Chicago will open at home Monday against Pittsburgh. Jon Lester (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will make his third start of the season. He's 9-6 with a 3.18 ERA in 18 career starts against the Pirates.

Dan Vogelbach homered twice, hit a bases-clearing double and set a career high with six RBIs, helping the Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 12-5 Sunday to extend the best start in club history at 9-2.

Edwin Encarnacion had a two-run homer and three hits for the Mariners, who have the AL's best record. Seattle has homered in each of its first 11 games, a team record, and leads the major leagues with 27.

Tim Anderson doubled among his four hits for the White Sox, who have lost five of eight. Adam Engel hit a solo shot off Matt Festa, who gave up three runs in the seventh.

Wade LeBlanc (2-0) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings with six strikeouts and one walk.

ivan Nova (0-1) allowed seven runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings, his shortest start since May 8, when he threw two innings for Pittsburgh against the White Sox.

Carlos Rodon (1-1, 1.59) is scheduled to start Monday's opener of a three-game series against Tampa Bay and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell (1-1, 3.46). Rodon allowed an unearned run in six innings against Cleveland in his last start.
