HS SOFTBALL: Mahomet-Seymour Outlasts Monticello

Mahomet-Seymour landed the last punch in a back-and-forth 11-9 win over Monticello in non-conference girls softball action Tuesday afternoon at Mahomet-Seymour High School.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and freshman pitcher Karley Yergler went through the Lady Sages lineup 9-up and 9-down the first time through the order, but Monticello broke through in the fourth inning thanks to two defensive miscues by Mahomet-Seymour and scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead without an extra-base hit.

Skyler Frye and Avery Oberheim drove in runs in the inning and the first four batters reached base and came around to score.

The Lady Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the score on Abby Akers run-scoring single. Ashley Wheeler walked to start the inning and Ashley Campbell reached on an error. After Yergler's humpback liner was snagged by Max Daniels at third, Wheeler was caught too far off second base and was thrown out on a double play before Akers brought in Campbell, who got into scoring position on a wild pitch. Akers was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Lady Sages took at 6-4 lead on a two-run home run by Miranda Fogal.

The Lady Bulldogs scored four in the bottom half of the inning to go up 8-6. Aubrie Shore led off with double, back-to-back errors allowed the tying runs to score and Akers broke the tie with a two-run single after back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out.

The Lady Sages responded with a three-run sixth inning to go up 9-8. Caitlyn Kessler reached on a one-out single, three straight walks brought in a run and Fogal came up big again with a two-run double that put Monticello on top, but the rally was ended on the play when Frye was thrown out at the plate.

Again, Mahomet-Seymour responded in the bottom half of the inning with the winning three runs. A single, walk and error started the inning with the tying run scoring on an error. With one out, Wheeler's sac-fly RBI to center field gave the Lady Bulldogs the final margin, 11-9.

The Lady Sages had a chance in the top of the seventh inning. Oberheim led the inning off with her third hit of the game. After Addison Wichus struck out and Oberheim moved up to third during the at-bat, Josie Nelson walked but Kessler hit into a double play to end the game.

Mahomet-Seymour's Shore picked up the win in circle in relief of Yergler and finished 2-for-4 with a single and double and two runs scored. Campbell doubled, tripled, drove in two and scored twice. Akers finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Monticello was led by Oberheim who finished 3-for-4 and drove in two. Kessler finished 2-for-4 and scored a run. Fogal homered, doubled, walked, scored twice and drove in four. Lizzie Stiverson, Daniels and Frye each scored two runs apiece for the Lady Sages.

Mahomet-Seymour improves to 14-8 overall while the Lady Sages drop to 8-12. Monticello will travel to Bloomington Central Catholic for their Illini Prairie Conference and season finale before heading to Regionals next week.
