Eugene Sutter of Heyworth

Eugene Sutter, 94, of Los Altos, Calif., passed away Monday (Dec. 30, 2013) at his residence with his children at his side.

He was born Dec. 28, 1919, in Bloomington, the son of Earl and Olive McComb Sutter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Paula Vermillion Sutter; and one grandson.

He is survived by two sons, Mark and Jan Sutter; one daughter, Jennith; three grandsons; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter, all of California; one sister, Marjorie Taylor; and one brother, Merwin “Sam” Sutter, Heyworth.

Eugene attended Short Point Elementary and Heyworth High School. He graduated from Illinois State Normal University and later earned his master’s degree from Eastern Michigan State University.

He was a World War II veteran, and retired professor of history and political science at Foot Hill College at Palo Alto, Calif.

Judy Dian McCrate Deitz of Heyworth

Judy Diane McCrate Deitz, 61, Heyworth, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday (Dec. 29, 2013) surrounded by family.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Heyworth. Her funeral will follow at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Randolph Township Memorial Cemetery, Heyworth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Judy McCrate benefit fund in care of First State Bank of Bloomington or Heyworth.

Judy was born April 18, 1952, to Joe and Nina Mae Harmon Deitz. They survive.

Also surviving are two sons, Jason Clesson, Heyworth, and Matt McCrate, Moline; daughter, Amber McCrate, Bloomington; sister, Jan (Brent) Sporleder–Fisher; and grandchildren, Riley Klaus, Chloe Clesson, Derrian Mosley, Zoe, Matthew and Mason McCrate.

Judy was a fun loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She had a beautiful smile. She enjoyed assisting with the care of her mom, shopping with her sister and best friend, Jan, but most of all she loved being with her grandchildren and children, and serving her Lord Jesus by helping others.

Evelyn Laura Gatchel of Monticello

Evelyn Laura Gatchel, 92, of Monticello, passed away at 11:30 a.m., December 18, 2013 at the Kirby Medical Center, Monticello.

Evelyn was born on August 15, 1921 in Campbellsville, KY, the daughter of Mark Turner and Mary (Whited) Colvin. She married Bernie Erwin Gatchel on February 9, 1947 in Monticello. He passed away September 14, 2002.

Survivors include her son; Gregory (Elizabeth) Gatchel of Ivesdale, IL and a sister; Betty Keith of Danville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers (William Colvin, Sr. and George Colvin), and a sister (Elizabeth Winder).

Evelyn retired from General Cable Corporation in Monticello. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Monticello and the Young at Heart. She loved gardening, volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program, and enjoyed meeting people and spending time with her friends.     

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Monticello Township Cemetery with the Rev. Bryan Morrow officiating. Mackey-Wright Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Monticello or an organization of the Donor’s Choice.

Rose Mary Evans of Clinton

Rose Mary Evans, 92, Clinton, formerly of Waynesville, died at 9:03 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 17, 2013) at her residence in Clinton.

Her funeral will be at noon Friday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with Candi Evans officiating. Burial will be in McLean Cemetery, McLean. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Home Sweet Home Mission, Bloomington.

She was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Stanford, daughter of Alfred August Kruse and Faye Dickson. She married Weldon Evans on Dec. 16, 1939, in Bloomington. He passed away Aug. 14, 1984.  

Survivors include her children, Stephen Weldon (Nova) Evans, Clinton, and Joy Ann (Danny) Upton, Bloomington; sisters, Doris Brennaman, El Paso, and Marjorie Magarity, Mackinaw; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Alfred Kruse Jr.

She attended several local churches. Rose Mary was a farmer’s wife. She had a passion for painting, crocheting and family genealogy. She also enjoyed traveling. Rose Mary was past president of the Waynesville Library Board and was instrumental in getting grants to rebuild the library after the 1970 tornado. Rose Mary was also a people person.

Roy W. Riegel of Clinton

Roy W. “Bubby” Riegel Jr., 95, Clinton, passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday (Dec., 15, 2013) at Liberty Village, Clinton.

Roy was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Bowling Green, Mo., a son of Roy W. and Nellie B. Griffith Riegel Sr. He married Marie F. Lugering on Nov. 4, 1941, in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Melvin R. (Linda Sue) Riegel and Gary J. (Trudi) Riegel, both of Clinton, and Michael B. (Susan) Riegel, Granite Bay, Calif.; three daughters, Pat D. (Lance) Reece, Clinton; Sandi K. Wilson, Fairfield, Iowa; and Debi M. (Craig) Patrick, Bloomington; three sisters; two brothers; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, two brothers and three sisters.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and American Legion, all of Clinton.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing at Clinton Country Club. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan, and he enjoyed playing croquet with his family. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was in farm sales for many years with Lindsey Brothers Co. where he was recognized for his superior sales and service on many occasions.

His memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Clinton, with the Rev. James P. Henning, OFM Conv., officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church. Military funeral honors will be accorded.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be at a later date in Palmyra, Mo.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church, Clinton. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home, Bloomington, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Sue Brown of Maroa

Sue Brown, Maroa, IL, was born May 15, 1938 and passed away December 14, 2013 after a long illness. Sue was born to John T. and Janie Harris and raised in Albertville, Alabama. She met Bill Brown while he was in the Army and stationed in Ft. McClelland, Alabama, and they were married in Aniston, Alabama on October 5, 1957. To this union were born three sons, Alan, Gary, and Bryant. Bill and Sue moved to Maroa, IL in 1960. They raised their family in Maroa where Sue, who was a gifted artist, excelled in painting portraits, scenic views on cross cut saws, and specialty requests. Many friends and neighbors in Maroa have Sue’s paintings hanging in their homes, a reminder of a talented and gifted life-long friend. Sue loved garage sales, flowers and decorating for each season.

Sue is survived by her husband, Bill, a son, Alan, Alan’s wife, Valarie, and their sons Wyatt and Garret Brown, a son, Bryant Brown and his daughter, Sherrie, a grandson, Dane Brown and his daughters, Veronica and Gabby Brown, extended family, and a host of friends. Sue was proceeded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters, and her son, Gary Brown.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at Calvert Funeral Home, Maroa, IL with Pastor Nic Showalter officiating. Burial will follow at Maroa Cemetery, Maroa, IL. Pat Smith of Kenney

Pat Smith, 75, of Kenney, IL, formerly of Taylorville, IL, went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 13, 2013 at Dr. John Warner Hospital in Clinton, IL.

 

Patsy Jo Marshall was born September 27, 1938 in Mechanicsburg, IL, the daughter of Glenn and Margurite Marshall. She graduated from Tri-City High School in 1956. On December 15, 1956, Pat married Aubrey E. Smith in Mechanicsburg. To this union were born Tammela Jean, Mark Vernon, Angela Lynn, Shelia Jo, and Aubrey Douglas. Pat and her family lived in Taylorville for fifty years before moving to Kenney in 2010.

 

Pat is survived by her husband, Aubrey; children: Tammy Marsh and husband Scott of Kenney; Mark; Angie Simmons and husband Bill of Taylorville; Shelia of Moweaqua; and Doug of Taylorville; fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, and her beloved cat of nearly nineteen years, Momma. She is also survived by two sisters, Judy Beecraft of Colorado and Beverly Burttle of Arizona, and sisters-in-law Sharon Mendoza and Mary Ann Smith of Girard, IL, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Pat worked for many years as a certified nurse’s aide in Taylorville and a homemaker. She was an avid bowler, loved playing Yahtzee and doing word search puzzles. She was very devoted to her family. Pat was a baptized member of Texas Christian Church in Clinton, IL where her son-in-law is the minister.

Jennifer Webber, 42, Mansfield, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Friday (Dec. 13, 2013) at her residence.

Jennifer was born Sept. 25, 1971, in Champaign, a daughter of Thomas J. Smith and Barbara Jo Rogers. She married James Thomas Webber on Dec. 10, 1986, in Springfield, Tenn. He survives.

Surviving are her father, Thomas J. (Pamela) Smith, Urbana; sons, James Thomas Webber Jr., Nicholas J. Webber and Shawn M. Webber, all of Mansfield; daughters, Brandi Jo (Noah) Turnpaugh, Clarksville, Tenn., and Ashley (Cameron) N. Webber, Mansfield; grandchildren, Abby Turnpaugh, Ava Turnpaugh, Braiden Vance and Waylon Williams Jiles; brothers William (Misty) Smith, Farmer City, and Thomas M. Smith, Urbana; and sisters, Chelse Boyers, Boston, Mass., and Regina Norelli, Austin, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Jennifer’s favorite thing to do was spend time with her children and grandchildren. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister and devoted friend who will be deeply missed.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Fisher, 87, of Bement, IL., passed away at 3:15 A.M. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello, IL.

 

Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ivesdale, IL. The Rev. Father Bruce Lopez will officiate. Deacon Jim Brewer will assist. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until time of services on Tuesday at the church in Ivesdale. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Ivesdale. Jackie was born on February 8, 1926 in Bement, IL., a daughter of Orville E. and Agnes Tynan Bowyer. She married Leon Gallagher on October 10, 1945, he passed away on March 23, 1969. She later married Kenneth Fisher on July 13, 1974, and he passed away March 20, 1997. Surviving children include; Bill (Julie) Gallagher of Bement, IL. and Angela (Dave) Ard of Carthage, IL., as well as daughter-in-law; Jane E. Gallagher of Rockville, MD. Surviving grandchildren include; Katherine B. Gallagher, Molly Gallagher, Zach (Sara Larson) Gallagher, Dylan Gallagher, Mac Gallagher, Brodie Gallagher, Alex (Brock) Edris, Kelly Ard, Nolan Ard and great-grandson; Grady Gallagher. Jackie is also survived by step-children; Linda Shearin of Ft. Collins, CO., Marilyn (Terry) Young of Monticello, IL., Donna Guerrero of Monticello, IL., and Nancy (Dave) McDougall of Northfield, MN., as well as step-grandchildren; Marti (Jeff) Drum, Brian Young, Jason (Ingrid) Young, Courtney (Dan) Lau, Mason (Cheryl) Harshbarger, Mathew Harshbarger, Melina Harshbarger, Tim (Erica) McDougall and Daniel McDougall. She is also survived by step-great-grandchildren; Ella and Grant Young, Sebastian, Francesca and Julian Young, and Sadie Harshbarger. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a son – Gary Gallagher, a step-son – Jerry Fisher, and a sister – Marlene Johnson

 

Jackie was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Bement,and she attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Schools and Bement Schools. She graduated from Champaign Beauty School in 1943.

Jeffrey Jess Cobstill of Argenta

Jeffrey Jess Cobstill, 67, of Argenta, IL passed away at 10:53 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 11, 2013) at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, IL.

 

A service to celebrate Jeff’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (Dec. 20, 2013) at Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta. The family requests casual attire for Jeff’s services. Jeff was born on August 14, 1946 in Harvey, IL, the son of Grady Ray and Amelia Louise (Badger) Cobstill. He was a United States Navy veteran. Jeff retired from the State of Illinois after 30+ years of service as the chief security officer for Adolph Meyer Mental Health Center, Decatur, IL and McFarland Mental Health Center, Springfield, IL. He had previously worked as a letter carrier for the USPS, ambulance driver in Cocoa, FL, funeral assistant for J.J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home, volunteer EMT/fireman in Argenta, independent courier and the Dewitt County Probation Department. Jeff was a member of the Cherokee Nation, his ancestors walked the Trail of Tears. He was a member of Tawaskote Longrifles and the Rogers Rangers. Jeff was a lifetime member of both the NRA and National Muzzleloaders Association. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and love to rendezvous. Jeff also taught hunting safety classes. He married Marcella Kay Mason on June 18, 1964.

 

Jeff is survived by his wife: Marcella Kay Cobstill of Argenta, IL; children: Ian-Lee D. Cobstill and his wife Quenna of Argenta, IL, Corrine K. Sharp and her husband Darren of Long Creek, IL, Malissa A. Munsterman and her husband Terry of Argenta, IL; sisters: Kathy Baggett and her husband Bob of Decatur, IL, Becky Hardesty and her husband Scot of Kennesaw, GA; brother: Dave Cobstill and his wife Carrie of Downs, IL; grandchildren: Timothy Cobstill, Amanda Cobstill, Emily Munsterman, Hanna Munsterman; great granddaughter: Gabrielle Stewart; several beloved nieces and nephews.

Irene Wey of Heyworth

Irene M. Wey, 81, rural Heyworth, passed away at 7:18 p.m. Monday (Dec. 9, 2013) at her home with her family at her side.

She was born July 14, 1932, in Cruger, the daughter of John J. and Nora Byrd Schieber. They preceded her in death.

She was the beloved wife of 60 years of Donald E. Wey, Heyworth, who she married Feb. 14, 1954; loving mother of Jeffrey E. Wey, Plainfield, and Jeanette I. (Jeffrey) Wissmiller, Heyworth; dear sister of Lorraine (Brice) Hallam, Macon; Robert (the late Joann) Schieber, Eureka; and the late John F. (Jane) Schieber, Eureka; and fond aunt of eight nieces and nephews.

Irene graduated from the Mennonite School of Nursing, Class of 1953, as a registered nurse. She worked at Mennonite Hospital and BroMenn Regional Medical Center, retiring after a long career; but, she continued to share her knowledge of nursing for many years to follow. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, having pieced together a number of quilts. She also enjoyed stamp collecting, coin collecting, camping and in later years helping her daughter at her dance studio. She was an active member of Heyworth Christian Church, Hands All Around Quilt Guild of Central Illinois, Hey Quilters and Sack n Sew.

For those who would like to leave a lasting tribute to Irene’s life, memorials to Heyworth Christian Church or ISU Mennonite College of Nursing would be appreciated.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Heyworth Christian Church, Heyworth. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heyworth Christian Church. The Rev. Vernon Oakley and the Rev. Jerry Dusenberry will officiate. Interment will follow at Randolph Township Cemetery, Heyworth. Arrangements were entrusted to Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Heyworth.

Trena Jones of Clinton

Trena Joann Jones, 53, Clinton, died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 7, 2013) at her residence.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton. Bill Vandervoort will officiate. Interment will be in DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Food Pantry or a charity of donor’s choice.

She was born Feb. 22, 1960, in Clinton, daughter of Delbert L. Jones and Reva Carter.

Survivors include her mother, Reva Jones, Clinton; father, Delbert L. Jones, DeWitt; brother, Gary (Deana) Jones, Clinton; and sister, Corina Shaw, Clinton. Also surviving are two nephews, two great-nephews and one great-nephew on the way.

Trena worked at State Farm Insurance Cos. for 33 years in the word processing department. She enjoyed writing poems, crocheting, knitting and reading the Bible.

Trena was a devoted Christian though the years. She loved the Lord and served Him daily as she was confined to home during the last few years.

She was a wonderful daughter and sister who will be truly missed.

Marion Snyder of Clinton

Marion W. “Buster” Snyder, 64, of Clinton passed away at 5:12 a.m. Friday (Dec. 6, 2013) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, Scott Marsh will officiate. Interment will be at Texas Township Cemetery, Clinton. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to DeWitt County Humane Society.

He was born Jan.31, 1949, in Clinton, to C. Dean Snyder and Hazel Crubaugh.

He is survived by his mother, Hazel Snyder, Clinton; children, Craig Snyder, Orlando, Fla., and Courtney Snyder, Clinton; grandson: Cameron Snyder, Florida; siblings, Leslie Carlock, Sullivan; Sharon Snyder, Clinton; Rosemary (Rodney) Moore, Suwanee, Ga.; Karl (Kim) Snyder, Kenney; Daniel (Cathy) Snyder, Clinton; and half sister, Sally Newman, Champaign.

He was preceded in death by his father and one infant sister.

Buster was a retiree from Revere Copper & Brass Inc., in Clinton and G & D in Decatur.

Buster was a very well respected individual by all who knew him. He had a passion for nurturing wildlife.

Mary Katerine Kerley of Waynesville

Mary Katherine Kerley, 96, Waynesville, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2013) at her residence.

Her funeral will be at noon Saturday at Otto-Argo-Calvert Memorial Home, Danvers. The Rev. Steve Evans will officiate. Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery, Danvers.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the memorial home. The family suggests memorials be made to Wapella Christian Church, Wapella.

Mary was born May 21, 1917, in Danvers, the daughter of William and Effie Roach Hess.

She married Henry Ray Kerley on Feb. 23, 1946, in Decatur. He passed away in March 1998.

Surviving are two children, Sharon Kerley, Waynesville, and Lonnie (Jan) Kerley, Clinton; two grandchildren, Andy (Courtney) Kerley, Cerro Gordo, and Becky (Brandon) Robinson, Clinton; and two great-grandchildren, Mia and Jack Kerley, Cerro Gordo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Louise and Adell; and one brother, John.

Lee Ann Boyd of Clinton

Lee Ann Boyd, 65, Clinton, passed away at 6:35 p.m. Monday (Dec. 2, 2013) at Manor Court, Clinton.

Services will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. The family has entrusted Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with cremation rites.

Memorials may be made to the DeWitt County Animal Shelter.

She was born Nov. 21, 1948, in Clinton, daughter of Robert Dane Burns and Harriett J. Hensley. She married Butch Boyd on July 25, 1965, in Kenney.

She is survived by one daughter, Bonny L. (Don) Hammer, Clinton; one son, Mike (Patricia) Boyd, Flower Mound, Texas; two grandsons, Zack Boyd and Kyle Hammer; one granddaughter, Jordan Hammer; and one sister, Lori Jo White, Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She worked for Peterson’s Insurance Agency for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.

James Rueger of Clinton

James Carl Rueger, 78, Clinton, died at 3:35 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 1, 2013) at Manor Court, Clinton.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Interment will be at Oak Park Cemetery, Clinton, with military honors. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 103, Clinton.

He was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Downs, son of Walter Carl and Marie Velma Bond Rueger. He married Carolyn Brown, who preceded him in death. He later married Ida Rebecca Glynn on Nov. 18, 1989, in Clinton.

Surviving him is his wife, Ida Rebecca Rueger, Clinton; children, Cindy (Rick) Smith, San Antonio, Texas; James Brian Rueger, Clinton; and Bradley Lewis (Michelle) Rueger, Arcadia, Fla.; stepchildren, Janet (Byron) Hoeffner, Watauga, Texas, and H. Robert (Amy) King, Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Aron and Eric Smith; four great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren, John, Jared, Rebecca, William and Siobhan; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Ezrah and Edith; and a brother, Dale (Brenda) Rueger, Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one stepdaughter, Jeanne Vogel; one grandson, Jared; and one brother, Gene Rueger.

He was in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving as an air police, Strategic Air Command.

James served as a Clinton city police officer before retiring. He also then drove trucks for raid construction and he was a Clinton school bus driver.
