HS FBall: BCC Holds Off Monticello

In a game heard on WEZC and at dewittdailynews.com, Bloomington Central Catholic scored the last 17 points of the game and held off Monticello 24-16 in Illini Prairie Conference high school football action Friday night in Monticello.

The Sages had a dream start looking for a signature win Friday night when they picked off Saints quarterback Colin Hayes and Luke Teschke finished the short drive with a 1 yard quarterback sneak put Monticello up 7-0.

On the second play of the next drive, Hayes would rumble 45 yards to the end zone to tie the score but the Sages answered quickly again.

Teschke hit Trey Welter from 45-yards out on a tailback sweep to Ike Young who threw back to Teschke whow threw to his open classmate to put Monticello up 13-6.

The Sages would pick off Hayes again on the next drive. Hayes hit his receiver in the helmet, it ricocheted off the helmet and right to Matt Swartz.

The Sages' drive stalled out but Cole Sowinski was able to slam through a 26-yard field goal to put Monticello up 16-7.

Unfortunately, that was almost the last of the sustained offense the Sages would muster despite turning over Hayes again later in the first half and standing up to the power run game of the BCC.

Last year the Saints pulled away late with the power run but Monticello was very good against BCC run game throughout the night.

Hayes would score from 17-yards out in the second quarter and Warren Tomczak hit a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give the Saints its first lead at 17-16 going to the intermission.

Another Hayes short touchdown run on BCC's first drive of the second half was the only scoring for the half on either side.

The Sages had a chance though after Tomczak missed a 30-yard field goal off the left upright.

The Sages would turn it over on downs with just over a minute left ending the possibility of a late comeback.

Teschke finished 20-for-27 with 245 yards and a touchdown through the air and ran for a score.

Ike Young finished the game with five catches for 55 yards and ran 12 times for 40 yards. Young was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game for his power runs and excellent defense.

Welter had his second straight 100-yard receiving game with 171 yards on seven catches with a touchdown.

Carter Foran had six catches for 62 yards and Rai Colbert finished with two catches for 15 yards. On the Sages' final drive, Monticello ran a hook-and-lateral. Tescke's short pass to Colbert to start the play was tipped but the senior made an athletic play to go up for the tip pass and lateral it to Foran. While the play only went for 14 yards, it extended the Sages' final drive.

Hayes finished with 25 carries for 205 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to pace BCC.

Will Adelman had ten carries and 83 yards for the Saints.

BCC stays undefeated, going to 4-0.

Monticello falls to 2-2.

The Sages travel to Pontiac next Friday night. Game time is 7 pm and can be heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
