John D. Miller, 66, of Monticello, passed away at 5:00 p.m., May 15, 2019 at Kirby Medical Center, Monticello.

John was a proud member of the Monticello community. He loved serving as Monticello’s Chief of Police from 1995-2012, and in recent years, thoroughly enjoyed serving as an alderman on the city council. John believed in justice, compassion, loyalty, tradition and served both his community and country by those standards. John proudly served our country as an E-6 Staff Sergeant in the United States Army in Germany, as well as the National Guard and Army Reserves.

John’s love for his community and country was only exceeded by his love of his family and friends. He loved spending time outdoors; enjoying activities such as camping, hiking, hunting, bicycling, and most of all, spending time with those he loved dearly. John enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He laughed often and loved whole-heartedly. He always strived to be loyal, kind, and honorable to everyone he met.

John’s heart belonged to Jesus. He thoroughly enjoyed serving and helping others and was passionate about a variety of local and international missions; especially helping families through disaster relief organizations.

John was born on Dec. 12, 1952. He married the love of his life, Karen, on July 20, 1978. John is preceded in death by his parents, Essell and Helen (Cook) Miller, and a daughter, Christina.

Surviving are his wife, Karen (Davis), two daughters, Stephanie Stevens (James) of Martin, TN, Kelly Miller of Monticello, two grandsons, Brock and Clayton, three brothers, Ron (Kathy) of Monticello, Gary (Jeanie) of DeWitt, IA, and Terry (Mary) of Bloomington, IL.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 2019, at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello. A private family celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
