Illinois Football May Have Long Term Starting Quarterback

The outlook on the Illinois football 2023 recruiting class did not drastically change Wednesday during the official signing period but one thing the transfer portal may have in store for Illinois is stability at the quarterback position for multiple seasons.

Bob Asmussen from IlliniHQ.com believes you have to go back to Nathan Sheelhaase the last time Illinois developed its own quarterback that played for multiple seasons. While he transfers in from Ole Miss, Luke Altmyer could be a long-term solution.

Asmussen had the chance to speak with Altmyer last week and was impressed. While not having the swagger of last year's starting quarterback Tommy DeVito, Altmyer offers a quiet confidence.

The Illini recruiting class turned out to be very strong. Illinois scored big signing in-state wideout Malik Elzy, a 6-foot-2 wide receiver from Chicago Simeon. Additionally, central Illinois product Kaden Feagin from Arthur signed with Illinois. Feagin is a 6-foot-3 athlete that played running back in high school.

Four-star, 6-foot-3 safety Saboor Karriem from West Orange, New Jersey was the class' top-ranked defensive player.
