Illini Win; NCAA Notes

>> Illini Edge Northwestern

Myke Henry made 1 of 2 free throws with 6 seconds left and Meyers Leonard blocked a shot just before the buzzer as Illinois pulled out a 57-56 victory over Northwestern on Wednesday night.

Leonard hit a free throw with 29 seconds left to put the Illini up 56-54, but Northwestern's Drew Crawford tied it on a tip with 17 seconds remaining.

After Brandon Paul drove but couldn't connect, Henry was fouled on a rebound follow-up. He made one free throw but missed the second.

Crawford rebounded and tried to drive the length of the floor, but the 7-foot-1 Leonard swatted the shot away.

Leonard led the Illini (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten) with 12 points. Paul and Joseph Bertrand added 10 each.

Shurna, the Big Ten's leading scorer at 18.6 for Northwestern (11-4, 1-2), had 17 first-half points but just the three in the second under tough defense from Paul.

>> ISU Tops Missouri State

John Wilkins scored 15 points and Illinois State never trailed Wednesday night in defeating Missouri State 68-60.

Tyler Brown and Bryant Allen had 14 points apiece for the Redbirds (10-4, 2-1 Missouri Valley). Jon Ekey had 12 rebounds and Jackie Carmichael grabbed 10 boards as Illinois State held a 44-33 edge on the glass.

Kyle Weems led Missouri State (9-6, 2-1) with 18 points. Jamar Gulley had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Bears.

Illinois State never led by more than 12 in the game, but Missouri State couldn't get any closer than five points after the first few seconds of the second half.

>> SIU Tops Bradley

Mamadou Seck had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southern Illinois past Bradley 74-65 on Wednesday night.

Davante Drinkard and Kendal Brown-Surles scored 12 points apiece for the Salukis (5-9, 2-1 Missouri Valley), who won their second in a row. Seck, who had his 11th career double-double, added six assists.

Dyricus Simms-Edwards led the Braves (5-10, 0-3) with 17 points. Walt Lemon Jr. added 16, Taylor Brown 13 and Jordan Prosser 11 as Bradley dropped its sixth straight.

The Salukis relied on 57% shooting (31 of 54) while limiting Bradley to 45% (25 of 56).

Southern Illinois missed 8 of its first nine shots but finished the first half sinking 16 of 18 to forge a 36-34 lead.

But the game was tied 17 times, and Southern Illinois did not take the lead for good until Dantiel Daniels' dunk made it 48-46 with 15:03 to go.
