Cubs' Reliever Kerry Wood Retires

The major league career of Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood is over.  The 34-year-old reliever retired after pitching one final game on Friday against the crosstown rival White Sox.  Wood struck out the only batter he faced in the eighth inning of the Cubs' 3-2 Interleague loss at Wrigley Field.  He was 0-and-2 with an 8.31 ERA and two blown saves in 10 games this season.  Wood had spent time on the disabled list this year with shoulder fatigue.  He went 86-and-75 with 63 saves over 14 major league seasons with the Cubs, Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees.
