Illinois lawmakers are moving closer to deciding the fate of a Chicago legislator accused of taking a bribe.
The Select Committee on Discipline meets Thursday to hear the evidence for and against Democratic Rep. Derrick Smith. Afterward, the committee votes on whether to recommend punishment, which could range from nothing to expulsion from the House.
Ultimately, the full House would have to vote on whether to take action against Smith.
Federal prosecutors say Smith took a $7,000 bribe in exchange for promising to steer a state grant to a daycare center. He denies the allegation.
Whatever legislators decide will have no effect on the criminal charges against Smith.
