Weekend Football Notes

>>AFC, NFC Face Off Sunday In Pro Bowl

(Honolulu, HI) -- The Super Bowl is still another weekend away, but most of the NFL's top stars will be on display this Sunday in the annual Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium. Denver Broncos head coach John Fox leads the host AFC squad against Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and the visiting NFC. The Broncos' Peyton Manning will start at quarterback for the AFC. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was selected to start for the NFC, but is out with an injury. A Pro Bowl record three rookie quarterbacks were selected this year in Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin the Third and Russell Wilson. Luck is an injury replacement for Patriots QB Tom Brady on the AFC side. RG3 is also out with a knee injury and will not play for the NFC. Wilson, Drew Brees and Eli Manning are the three quarterbacks on the NFC roster.

The Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers had the most Pro Bowl selections with nine, but the 49ers players have been replaced as they prepare for Super Bowl 47 instead. The AFC beat the NFC 59-41 last year, with then Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall winning MVP honors. A lack of defense by either team in order to avoid injury has prompted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to consider whether the series should continue. The game has been played in Hawaii every year since 1979, except 2010 when it was played in Miami, site of that year's Super Bowl.

>>North, South Clash In Saturday's Senior Bowl

(Mobile, AL) -- College football's top players will be looking to impress in the annual Senior Bowl tomorrow in Mobile, Alabama. The nation's top senior talent will comprise teams representing the North and South. It offers NFL teams another chance to evaluate players in game conditions, and players the chance to boost their stock ahead of the April draft. The South roster is led by quarterbacks Landry Jones of Oklahoma, Arkansas' Tyler Wilson and E.J. Manuel of Florida State. The North roster features N.C. State quarterback Mike Glennon as well as Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson making the switch to wide receiver. The North beat the South 23-13 last year behind the MVP efforts of Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead. The South leads the overall series 30-27-and-3. Three games in the early 1990s did not feature the North-South format. Saturday's kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Eastern.
