DeWitt County Triad Setting Goals For 2013

A new community group aimed at protecting the senior citizens of DeWitt County is going on one year of formation.

The DeWitt County Triad program is closing in on their first year in service in DeWitt County. DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner explains the group is outlining their goals for 2013. He says the first goal they have is to work with the senior community to not become victims of theft, vandalism and scams.

Another goal for the Triad in 2013 will be to develop a program known as "RU OK". The Sheriff explains it would be a computer based program that a senior citizen would dial a number and key a dial command to register themselves as "OK" or needing help.

A third goal for the group is to continue to raise awareness of scams amongst seniors. Sheriff Shofner says scams are one of the most under-reported crimes facing law enforcement today, and he hopes to protect seniors by raising awareness of the things to do to keep from being scammed, but what to do when they are scammed.

The final goal for the Triad in 2013 is to continue offering periodic "Rules of the Road" course training through AARP. Late last year, one was held and the Sheriff says it was a huge hit that provided lots of good information. Sheriff Shofner adds AARP also provided special discounts to the Veterans who took the course.

The group aims to protect the senior citizens of DeWitt County through awareness raising classes and events, but they also help to provide opportunities for seniors to maintain a safe lifestyle.
