Trial Set For Illinois Man Charged In Toddler Death

A central Illinois man charged with murder in the death of a toddler will have one trial rather the two his defense attorney sought.

According to reports, a judge decided Wednesday that 25-year-old Nicholas Compton will be tried Jan. 5 on 13 charges in the March 2013 death of 3-year-old Robert "Robbie" Cramer.

Compton says the boy died accidentally.

Murder and aggravated domestic battery counts were filed in April 2013 and aggravated battery counts filed in August 2013.

Compton's attorney said the two sets of charges aren't directly linked and should be separated.

The boy died of peritonitis due to blunt force trauma to his abdomen.

His mother, Danielle Fischer, was Compton's girlfriend and is charged with murder. Court officials say she has not entered a plea.
