Urbana Sets Rules For Marijuana Growth, Sales

City Council members in Urbana set up rules governing where and how marijuana could be grown and sold in the city.

According to reports, the council voted Monday to require that growers to be at least 2,500 feet from any school, daycare or residence. Sellers would have to be 1,000 feet from schools or daycares but allowed in commercial areas.

There's no guarantee the city will have either business under the new state law allowing marijuana sales and growth for medicinal use. The state will license two sellers and one grower in the nine-county East Central Illinois region. That includes Champaign County.

But city leaders believe setting rules early could turn Urbana into a likely location for what they see as an emerging health care industry.
