Cards, Cubs Win; Sox Notes

(St. Louis, MO) -- Matt Holliday singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Cardinals rallied past the Pirates 5-4 in the first of three from Busch Stadium. Kolten Wong hit a pinch-hit two-run homer earlier in the seventh to tie the game at four. Holliday also had a two-run double in the third for the Redbirds, who have won three straight to take over first place in the NL Central. St. Louis now leads Milwaukee by one game in the division after the Brewers lost their sixth straight to the Cubs on Monday. Seth Maness picked up the win in relief and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 41st save with a flawless ninth. Andrew McCutchen homered, Neil Walker had a two-run double and Andrew Lambo doubled in a run for the Bucs, who are three games behind the Cards. Gerrit Cole yielded all five runs in six-and-a-third frames to suffer the loss and fall to 7-and-5.

(Chicago, IL) -- Welington Castillo hit a two-run homer and drove in three as the Cubs doubled up the Brewers 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Luis Valbuena added a solo shot for the Northsiders, who snapped a two-game skid. Jacob Turner struck out seven over six-and-a-third innings of one-run ball as he upped his mark to 5-and-8. Hector Rondon closed it out for his 23rd save. Khris Davis and Gerardo Parra both hit solo homers as Milwaukee dropped its sixth straight. Jimmy Nelson allowed three runs in six frames to fall to 2-and-6 with the loss.

(Oakland, CA) -- Former White Sox slugger Adam Dunn says he's retiring after this season. Dunn was traded to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday and homered in his first at-bat with his new team yesterday. The 34-year-old hit .220 with 20 homers and 54 RBI for Chicago this season.
