Wacha Returns For St. Louis, Castro Out For Cubs; Baseball Notes

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha [[ wah-kuh ]] will be back on the mound tonight as St. Louis begins a four-game series at the Milwaukee Brewers. He is making his return after going down with shoulder stress to his right pitching arm. Wacha has been out since June 17th.

All-Star shortstop Starlin Castro is expected to miss the remainder of the Chicago Cubs' season with an ankle injury.

Castro left Tuesday night's 7-1 win over Milwaukee after getting hurt on a first-inning slide into home plate. Tests showed he sustained a high ankle sprain.

Castro, a three-time All-Star, was holding out hope that he could beat the four-week prognosis to return. But general manager Jed Hoyer said Wednesday the organization will move forward as though Castro had played his final game this season.

 width=Cubs rookie Javier Baez, a natural shortstop, will shift over from second base and take Castro's place in the field.

(New York, NY) -- San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner is the National League Pitcher of the Month for August. Bumgarner went 4-and-1 with a 1.57 ERA in six starts during the month. He had 56 strikeouts and just three walks in 46 innings. It's his second monthly award of the season after also winning in May. Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks is the NL Rookie of the Month after going 4-and-0 with a 1.69 ERA.

(New York, NY) -- Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison is the National League Player of the Month for August. He led the NL in total bases with 71, extra-base hits with 19, hits with 41 and a .602 slugging percentage. He batted .347 with nine RBI in the month.

(New York, NY) -- Detroit Tigers slugger Victor Martinez is the American League Player of the Month for August. Martinez hit .350 with six homers, 30 RBI and a .442 on-base percentage in 31 games.

>>Angels' Shoemaker Named AL Pitcher, Rookie Of The Month

(New York, NY) -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker is the American League Pitcher and Rookie of the month for August. Shoemaker went 6-and-1 in seven starts for the AL West-leading Halos. He had a 1.31 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 41-and-a-third innings. He is just the fourth pitcher to win both awards in the same month.
