DeWitt County Board Member Targets State's Attorney, Better Government For DeWitt County at Monday Event

At a Monday candidates forum, a local DeWitt County Board member made some pointed comments towards elected officials.

Terry Hoffman addressed a room of about a dozen senior citizens Monday at the DeWitt County Housing Authority as part of a meet and greet of candidates for the upcoming Tuesday election. Hoffman spoke primarily on the landfill, and says his efforts for change have been greatly opposed by "the opposition".

The County has taken two referendum measures to find where the public stands in regard to chemical waste at the landfill. Hoffman directed comments towards certain "entities" within the board in favor of this, and also accuses State's Attorney Karle Koritz of "being with the landfill" and "not looking out for the people of the county".

Hoffman then came after the Better Government for DeWitt County Group that has formed. Hoffman says the group supports hazardous waste over the Mahomet Aquifer and he's started to get "political pressure the first six days [he] was in office".

Terry Redman is the Chair of the DeWitt County Democratic Committee and part of the Better Government for DeWitt County group, and was on hand Monday night. He says what Hoffman is saying is factually incorrect, and "he knows better than that". He says Hoffman is going about this wrong.

Surrounding communities and counties have voiced and their opposition, but Redman points out the surrounding communities had nothing to lose, but DeWitt County had nearly a million-and-a-half dollars in host fees to lose.

Redman boils the upcoming election down to two things. He says if residents think anything positive has been done in the County in the last two years, to "heed Terry's advice", but if residents think nothing has been done, they should support the Better Government For DeWitt County candidates.
