Freezing Property Taxes Would Handcuff Schools

width=As the State of Illinois continues to hash out a budget, among several agenda items Governor Bruce Rauner has pushed for through the budgeting process has been a property tax freeze.

According to Lincoln High School Superintendent Robert Bagby, a property tax freeze would severely hamper their district in future years because of their decreasing rate year by year.

Bagby explains while the Board of Education in Lincoln has done the right things in working towards lower taxes for their taxing body, the state is going to handcuff them by freezing that rate at such a low level.

Despite the possibility of losing those dollars, Bagby says he wouldn't change the way they have lowered property taxes. He calls the decision the right one and feels now the district is being punished for making the right choices.

Bagby feels many districts are being bailed out with the money Lincoln High School has cut because others weren't willing to be frugal.

Compounding the issue of the property tax freeze is the fact federal and state dollars continue to shrink. Bagby says eventually they may not be able to rely on any of them.
