Property Tax Freeze Concerning To Area School Leader

A piece of legislation in Springfield has one area Superintendent concerned about the future of their local revenues.

Much has been made about the property tax freeze that Governor Bruce Rauner wants in place but now area school leaders say, that piece of legislation concerns them.

One such leader is Mike Williams, Superintendent of Maroa-Forsyth Schools. He explains under the legislation, any governing body could not increase their levies for two years.

According to Williams, the growth in the communities of Maroa and Forsyth would not be able to be tapped into under this law. He explains any development that could happen would fall under their current local revenues.

One possibility that would really hurt the district would be the potential wind farms that could go up in Macon County. Williams indicates they could not ask for an increase of funds despite the increase in the property values.

For school districts like Maroa-Forsyth that benefit from the one-cent education sales tax, many districts have committed to paying off debt in the district with a majority of those funds. Williams notes, the property tax freeze bill would also impact that aspect of their budget.

Williams points out, this issue is something that will more than impact his school district or other distrcits. It will impact every single government entity.
