Social Security Promoting Applications for Green Cards, Social Security Cards

As the result of a recent partnership between Social Security and the Department of Homeland Security U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, or USCIS, non-citizens can now apply for their Social Security card at the same time they file for their lawful permanent resident status or green card.

Jack Myers with Social Security indicates the new process doesn’t change the requirements for receiving a Social Security card, but it does remove the step of having to make an appointment to visit a Social Security office once you receive your green card. If you complete the Social Security card questions on your Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (Form I-485), USCIS will send us information from your approved I-485.

Myers points out this will serve as your request for your Social Security card. Once they receive and approve your Social Security card request, they will mail your card to the address you gave on your I-485. He adds your Social Security card will typically arrive within 7 business days after your receive your Permanent Resident from USCIS.

This is an expansion of the Enumeration Beyond Entry (EBE) program. Under EBE, a similar process has been in place since October 2017 when you apply for Work Authorization through USCIS.
