Hield Lifts Oklahoma Past Texas; 'Nova Nation's New No. 1

Buddy Hield scored 12 of his 27 points in the final 3:11, including two 3-pointers.

Hield's 3-pointer from the left wing with 1.3 seconds remaining lifted No. 3 Oklahoma to a 63-60 victory over No. 24 Texas.

Isaiah Cousins added 17 points for the Sooners (20-3, 8-3 Big 12), who trailed for most of the game. Oklahoma bounced back from a loss at Kansas State on Saturday that cost it the No. 1 ranking. The Sooners beat the Longhorns for the sixth straight time and increased their home winning streak to 19 games.

Isaiah Taylor scored 19 points and Kendal Yancy added a season-high 13 for Texas (16-8, 7-4), which had won four straight and seven of eight. The Longhorns entered the Top 25 for the first time this season earlier Monday.

>>Villanova No. 1 in AP Poll, Coaches Poll

It seems like history or something very notable is being introduce to the men's Division I AP poll every week.

The latest release has the Villanova Wildcats atop the rankings, marking the first time in the history of the program this has happened. The team right on Nova's heels, Maryland, also has never been No. 1. So if Maryland wins this week but Nova doesn't, we'll be right back here with a history-marking poll in seven days.

VU's jump was made possible because of losses by Oklahoma and UNC on Saturday. The Sooners and Heels fell to unranked teams, marking the first time in a decade No. 1 and No. 2 fell on the same day to programs outside the top 25. Villanova took 32 out of 65 first-place votes. Maryland receieved 13. Iowa had 11 voters claim it to be No. 1. Oklahoma, despite losses in consecutive weeks, still received seven first-place votes, while Kansas and Virginia each received one vote for the top spot.

Villanova's next game comes on Tuesday at DePaul. Maryland is home to Bowie State on Tuesday, but Bowie State is not a Division I school. The Terps' next game in Big Ten play is on Saturday at home against Wisconsin.

Villanova is your new No. 1 team in the country in this week's coaches poll, receiving only 11 of the possible 32 first-place votes in the poll. Behind the Wildcats is Maryland at No. 2, who also garnered 11 first-place votes. Overall, seven different teams had first-place votes in this week's poll. There is no clear No. 1 in college hoops this season folks. It's going to be a bumpy ride to the end.

Behind the top two, Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by Xavier sitting at No. 4 -- a new program high for the Musketeers -- and Iowa at No. 5.

Two teams fell out of the poll this week, as well. Louisville dropped from No. 18 to out, as teams that are ineligible for the postseason are ineligible for this poll (although, that didn't stop the Cardinals from getting 12 votes). Also, Saint Mary's dropped out of the rankings following a loss to BYU.

Replacing them in the standings were USC, who is now at No. 23, and Texas at No. 25. The rise of the Longhorns this season is a pretty fun one, given that they were 9-6 following a road loss to TCU a month ago. However, they have ripped off seven wins in their last eight games under Shaka Smart, including victories over Iowa State, Baylor and West Virginia to push their record to 16-7 overall and only one game out of the Big 12 conference title race.
