Cubs Recall Willson Contreras

The Cubs awill head into a weekend home series against the Pirates with an MLB-best 44-20 record. They've had unbelievable success the past few seasons in promoting position-playing prospects and now they'll attempt to add another to the list. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that catcher Willson Contreras will get the call before Friday's series opener.

Contreras, 24, was ranked as the 67th best prospect in baseball prior to the season and he's done nothing but increase his stock in Triple-A. Through Wednesday, Contreras was hitting .350/.439/.591 with 16 doubles, three triples and nine homers in 54 games for Iowa.

The 6-foot-1 Venezuelan really broke through last season in Double-A, hitting .333/.413/.478 with 34 doubles, eight home runs and 75 RBI. A signature the past two seasons is walking nearly the same number of times he strikes out. He had 62 strikeouts and 57 walks last year and so far is at 28 walks and 32 strikeouts this season.

It's unclear how much playing time Contreras will receive because the Cubs will now have three catchers on their roster.
