Late Rally Lifts Monticello Past Warrensburg-Latham

In a game heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, the Monticello Sages turned a four-point deficit into a four point lead with an 8-0 run, and held on for a 54-50 win over Warrensburg-Latham Tuesday night in non-conference boys basketball action from Monticello High School.

 

The Sages trailed 48-44 with 3:14 to play in the game, but the Sages flipped the deficit into a lead forcing two turnovers and grabbing two offensive rebounds to take a 52-48 lead.

Isiah Florey was fouled on a layup to tie the game but missed the and-one free throw, but Calvin Fisher got the offense rebound and made the putback layup for the Sages first lead since the 1:44 mark of the first quarter.

 

The Sages held on despite missing two straight free throws in one-and-bonus situations, but Fisher made two free-throws with eight seconds left to make 54-50.

 

Fisher led the Sages with 17 points and grabbing five rebounds. Isiah Florey added 12 points with six rebounds and dished out four assists.

 

Johnny Dawson and Luke Stokowski added ten apiece.

 

6-foot-9 senior Andrew Butts led all scorers with 21 points. The Cardinals came in with four players averaging double-figures in scoring, though no other player finished in double-figures for the night.

 

The Sages outscored Warrensburg-Latham in the paint 40-26, and turned 17 turnovers into 27 points while grabbing eight offensive rebounds for 12 points. The Cardinals did not have any second chance points.

 

Both teams shot better than 50-percent for the game while Monticello outrebounded Warrensburg-Latham 22-19.

 

The Sages improves to 12-3 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 14-4.
