Illinois Baseball Notes

>>Illini's Turchin Big Ten Player of the Week

Illinois junior outfielder Doran Turchin was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Turchin follows last week's winner Michael Massey to give Illinois two straight player of the week honors.

Turchin reached base in 12 of 15 plate appearances during last weekend's three games in Greenville, S.C. He led Illinois with a .625 batting average (5-8) and added seven walks for an .800 on-base percentage. Turchin also slugged a team-best 1.250 with three extra-base hits, including a home run against Furman.

>>Illini No. 24 in Baseball America Poll

The Illinois baseball team appeared Monday in the Baseball America top-25 poll for the first time this season, ranking No. 24 in the nation.

Illinois has won seven of its last eight games, including wins over No. 16 UCLA and previously ranked Coastal Carolina. After a weekend sweep of the DQ Classic/Pac-12-Big Ten Challenge two weekends ago, the Illini won two of three in Greenville, S.C. last weekend while putting up 33 runs in three games.

Illinois has been productive in all three facets of the game so far in 2018. The Illini have slashed .261/.360/.438 as a team, own a team ERA under 4.00 and are fifth in the nation in fielding percentage at .985.

The home schedule begins Wednesday with Milwaukee visiting Illinois Field. A trip to Carbondale, Illinois, for a three-game series against Southern Illinois follows this weekend.

No. 18 Indiana is the only other Big Ten team ranked by Baseball America. The Hoosiers are No. 14 according to D1Baseball.com, while the Illini are unranked.
