Illinois Wins Sunday, Takes Weekend Series Over Southern Illinois

Ty Weber allowed one earned run on three hits over eight innings Sunday to beat Southern Illinois 6-2 at Itchy Jones Stadium. 
 
Weber's day ended with 14 straight outs and Joey Gerber closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth. Weber struck out a career-high eight and moved to 3-1 on the year.
 
The Illini got hits from eight of the nine starters, including two from leadoff man Zac Taylor. Taylor doubled and scored in the first, then drove in a run with a single in a four-run fifth inning.
 
Doran Turchin, Michael Michalak, Ben Troike and Jack Yalowitz also singled in the big fifth inning, one frame after Illini head coach Dan Hartleb was ejected for arguing a call.
 
Brad Harrison (3-1) took his first loss of the season. He threw 7 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
 
Illinois is off Monday before playing Tuesday at Illinois State and Wednesday at home against Cal State Northridge. Big Ten play starts next weekend with a trip to Northwestern.
 
The Illini won the series 2-1 and have won 10 of their last 12 games.
