Optimism Growing Over High School Sports Resuming

Last week felt like a turning point in the fight towards the return of high school athletics in Illinois.

Jon Kerr of the Kerr Report has been following the up-and-down battle to bring back high school sports in Illinois and says last week felt like a turning point as several high-profile people began using their platforms to advocate for student athletes. Kerr is as optimistic as he's been in this whole process.

A lack of transparency from the Governor's office has long been a frustration for administrators, coaches, parents and athletes. Kerr points out the frustration is only growing watching all the surrounding states successfully execute sports seasons.

According to Kerr, the good news is that there is finally movement in the dialogue between the IHSA, IDPH and the Governor's office, as the three entities recently met to discuss what is next.

Kerr says the IHSA has kicked the can to the end of the road and now decisions have to be made. In about a month, the rescheduled high school football and volleyball seasons are tentatively scheduled to start back up.

Friday, it was announced Illinois regions reduced their COVID mitigations, opening the door for some prep sports to return.
