ISU Drops 2 out of 3 at Arkansas State

Colin Wyman fired five scoreless innings on 42 pitches in relief to lead Illinois State in a doubleheader split Arkansas State (4-5) at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field on Saturday.

The 'Birds dropped game one, 2-1, before responding with a 7-1 win in game two.

Illinois State (5-4) got five runs in the 7th inning of game two on a two-RBI single from junior Jake McCaw and a bases-clearing double from sophomore Greg Nichols.

Derek Salata recorded a career-high eight strikeouts over six innings in game one.

Arkansas State got things rolling in the opener, scoring a run in both the 2nd and 3rd innings to lead 2-0.

Aidan Huggins and Connor Olson recorded a successful double steal in the 5th inning as the ASU catcher attempted to catch Huggins at second base. The throw got away, allowing Olson to score.

Nick Gile singled in the 9th inning before pinch-running JT Sokolove swiped second. The Redbirds were unable to cash in as ASU closed the game.

Illinois State scored in the 2nd inning of the second game as Nichols grounded home Gile, who led off the inning with a double.

A two-RBI single by McCaw gave the 'Birds some breathing room and a 3-0 lead before Nichols cleared the bases with a three-RBI double.

ASU got one back in the 8th inning, but Matt Darr recorded a 9th-inning RBI single in his first at-bat as a 'Bird to push the lead to 7-1.

Illinois State is scheduled to play Tuesday at UT-Martin.
