Mt. Pulaski's perfect start to its season came to an end Wednesday afternoon as PORTA downed the Hilltoppers 3-2 in non-conference high school boy's baseball action from Petersburg.
Evan Cooper was handed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and was brilliant in a losing effort but a three-run fifth inning allowed the Blue Jays to stave off the high-powered Hilltoppers offense.
Gavin Smith finished 1-for-3 for Mt. Pulaski with an RBI and Landon Smith scored the lone run for the Hilltoppers.
Cooper struck out eight across six innings of three-run ball with one earned run allowed and permitted six hits and did not issue a walk.
Mt. Pulaski drops to 6-1 overall. They resume Tomahawk Conference action this afternoon at Delevan.
