Chupp Leads Monticello Past Champaign St. Thomas More

In a game heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Dawlton Chupp led Monticello in a complete game, one-run outing as the Sages rolled Champaign St. Thomas More 5-1 in Illini Prairie Conference high school boy's baseball action Monday in Monticello.

The undisputed ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties player of the game permitted a run on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Chupp was efficient all afternoon getting the leadoff batter in five of the seven innings.

Chupp's defense rebounded from a tough outing last Thursday in a catastrophic sixth inning in a home game against Olympia, playing error-free baseball. In center field in the third, Triston Foran provided a highlight-reel catch when Sabres nine-hitter Justen Green laced a sinking line drive to right-center field and Foran laid out robbing Green of potentially extra bases.

Leading off the sixth inning, STM's Dawson Magrini laced a base hit to the right-center field gap and appeared to have legged out a triple but overslid the bag and was tagged out by Sages third basemen Joey Sprinkle on the play.

Monticello got its scoring rolling right away in the first inning. Biniam Lienhart singled then stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Foran walked and stole second, setting up second and third with no outs, and Joey Sprinkle singled to left to score Lienhart easily.

As Foran rounded third, he collided with Sabres third basemen Cooper Hannagan and was awarded home on interference. With cleanup hitter Jacob Trusner batting, Sprinkle took second on the play and advanced to third on another wild pitch.

Trusner grounded to third and Sprinkle sprinted home on contact and was easily tagged out for the first out.

With Jack Buckalew batting, Trusner took off for second on a delayed steal and was easily thrown out. Buckalew would walk and Thomas Swartz's single advanced Buckalew to third. Tylor Bundy, running for Swartz, stole second. Spencer Mitze grounded one to second base but it was booted allowing Buckalew to score. Trying to score from second, Bundy was easily thrown at the plate to end the inning and all three Monticello outs came on the base paths.

Sprinkle walked with one out in the third inning and came home on another Mitze ground ball to second base that was booted.

Mitze led off the fourth with a third fielding error at second base and scored on Lienhart's single up the middle.

Lienhart finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Sprinkle drove in two and reached base three times on his first-inning base hit, third-inning walk, and a fifth-inning hit by pitch.

Foran, Mitze, and Swartz each finished 1-for-3.

Ryan Hendrickson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Sabres.

STM drops to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Illini Prairie action.

The Sages halt a two-game losing skid and move to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the Illini Prairie. They will host Mattoon Tuesday afternoon. The next Sages boy's baseball broadcast on WEZC will be next Monday when they host Maroa-Forsyth.

Hear girl's softball action this week on WEZC and at dewittdailynews.com Wednesday afternoon when the Lady Sages host Clinton.
