HS FBALL: Maroons Fall At Eureka

In a game heard Friday night on WHOW, the Clinton Maroons fell to the Eureka Hornets, 47-28, in a non-conference road contest.

Clinton started with a bang as Colton Walker returned the opening kickoff 58-yards to set up the Maroons with excellent starting field position.  The return was followed up a few plays later by a scrambling Mason Walker touchdown pass to a leaping Ryan Stapleton putting Clinton up 6-0.

Eureka would answer on their first possession with a Mason Boles 9-yard touchdown run tying the game at 6 apiece.  From there, things would pick up dramatically as Eureka added two more Boles touchdowns and a 6-yard Dawson Dorn touchdown pass to lead 28-6 with 33 seconds left in the first half.

However, that left Clinton enough time to score two touchdowns before the break!  Dawson Graves returned a Hornets kickoff 75-plus yards for a score, and the ensuing kickoff was then recovered by the Maroons.  Two plays later Mason Walker found his brother, Colton, down the sideline for a 24-yard TD to bring the score to 28-20 Hornets at the half.

Neither team would find the end zone in the third quarter, but the first play of the fourth saw the Hornets send Boles into the end zone for the fourth time to go up 35-20.  Eureka would then score score again twice more to lead 47-20.

Clinton's last score came on a 70-yard Dawson Graves run with 51-seconds left to play, bringing the final to 47-28.

Graves was named the WHOW / Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.  He finished with 6 carries for 107 yards, and a touchdown, a catch for 17 yards, and the kickoff return for a touchdown.

Mason Walker went 5 of 17 passing for 67 yards and two touchdowns.  He ran 8 times for 22 yards.  Tristin Potts ran 10 times for 16 yards, and Colton Walker had 2 catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. Stapleton had the 21-yard touchdown grab.

Eureka's Mason Boles ran 26 times for 116 yards and four touchdowns, and had 4 catches for 45 yards.  Dawson Dorn was 15 of 20 passing for 233 yards, and two touchdowns.  He also ran 16 times for 44 yards, and a score.

Eureka improves to 2-1 on the year, and opens Heart of Illinois Conference play at home next Friday against GCMS.

The Maroons fall to 1-2 on the season, and open Central Illinois Conference play next Friday on the road at Central A&M. Hear the Maroons in action Friday night on all WHOW platforms.
