HS FBALL: Clinton Doubles Up Warrensburg-Latham; Becomes Playoff Eligible

In a game heard Friday night on WHOW, the Clinton Maroons traveled to Warrensburg-Latham, and picked up a 48-24 Central Illinois Conference win.

The Maroons' Colton Walker picked off the Cardinals' Brayden Hickey's first pass of the game, and from there proceeded to jump out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. Clinton scored in the first with two touchdown runs from Tristin Potts, and another from Dawson Graves.  Graves was also on the receiving end of a 20-yard Mason Walker touchdown pass.

Potts would find the end zone again halfway through the second quarter, putting the Maroons up 35-0.  However, Hickey would lead Warrensburg to two second quarter scores.  He found Kaden Gardner from 21 yards out, and then Andrew Tuttle from 46 yards.  The Maroons used the final 46-seconds of the half to drive down the field for Walker to find Colton Walker from 9-yards out to end the half up 42-12.

The second half saw the offenses slow down.  Clinton's only score was another Potts run from 4-yards out with just under three minutes to go in the third. The Cardinals would add two more Hickey touchdown passes, both to Cartell Lee, to bring the final to 48-24.

Tristin Potts was the Maroons workhorse, carrying the ball 24 times for 189 yards and four touchdowns to earn the WHOW / Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.  Mason Walker was 10 of 18 passing for 100 yards, and two touchdowns.  He also ran 12 times for 82 yards.  Dawson Graves had four catches for 53 yards, and a touchdown.  He carried the ball 7 times for 18 yards and a score.  Colton Walker also had three catches for 47 yards, and a TD for Clinton.

Warrensburg sees their playoff hopes take a hit as they drop to 3-4 overall, and 2-2 in conference.  The Cardinals host Tuscola next week.

Clinton becomes playoff eligible with their fifth win of the season.  The Maroons are now 5-2 overall, and 4-0 in the CIC.  They'll host Shelbyville for Senior Night next Friday night.  The winner of that matchup will be the conference champion in the final year of the present day Central Illinois Conference.  Hear all of next week's contest on all WHOW platforms!
