In a game heard Saturday afternoon on WHOW, the Clinton Maroons fell on the road to the Sullivan-Okaw Valley Redskins, 14-13, in Class 3A high school football playoff action.
The Maroons defense started the game strong pushing the Redskins backwards, and forcing a punt. However, that punt would bounce off a Maroon and be recovered by the Redskins. The very next play saw SOV quarterback Cooper Christensen find Hayden Moody for a 69-yard touchdown pass to put the Redskins up 6-0.
The Maroons would answer with a minute left in the first quarter when backup quarterback Keaton Graves' tipped pass was pulled in by Ryan Stapleton in the endzone for a 7-yard touchdown grab. The missed extra point put the score at 6 to 6. Graves piloted the Maroons offense due to starter Mason Walker being sidelined by an IHSA suspension.
Neither team would score until the Maroons used a halfback pass to find the endzone with under a minute to play in the half. Graves tossed the snap to running back Tristin Potts, who then found Colton Walker for a 32-yard score. Clinton converted the extra point to lead 13-6 at the halftime break.
The second half was a back and forth defensive battle. Sullivan would score the game's final touchdown with 1:38 to play in the third quarter when Christensen found Moody from 12-yards out to make it 13-12. The Redskins converted a two point conversion to go up 14-13.
Both teams had chances to score in the fourth, but neither could punch it in, as the Redskins held on to the 14-13 win.
Christensen led Sullivan going 16 of 29 thru the air for 228 yards, and two scores. He also ran 15 times for 84 yards. Aiden Ballinger had 9 catches for 123 yards. Moody caught 3 passes for 91 yards, and two touchdowns. The Redskins improve to 9-1 on the season.
Clinton was led by Tristin Potts who had 22 carries for 148 yards, and a 32-yard touchdown pass. Potts was named the Serv Pro of Piatt/Dewitt County Player of the Game. Keaton Graves was 4 of 16 passing for 44 yards, and a touchdown. He ran 9 times for 27 yards. Colton Walker had 4 catches for 68 yards, and a touchdown.
The Maroons end the season with a 6-4 record.
