HS BBBall: Monticello Takes Third Place at Holiday Hoopla

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Monticello started fast and never looked back as they rolled Oakwood 54-31 for a third-place finish from the Holiday Hoopla the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.

 

Trey Welter scored the game's first nine points from beyond the arc and Sages 14-2 after the first quarter. 

 

The Sages stretched its lead to 31-15 at the half and then led 49-22 after three quarters.

 

Welter not only was terrific offensively for the Sages but was excellent on defense - helping create several turnovers. Welter was again the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.

 

Maddux Quick, Gatsby Grant, and Matt Swartz each scored eight points for the Sages while Ike Young had six points and four boards.

 

The Sages dished out 12 assists on its 19 turnovers and committed just seven turnovers. 

 

Monticello turned over Oakwood 19 times to the tune of 16 points.

 

Each team had 14 points in the paint. 

 

The Comets shot 33 percent for the game while the Sages shot only 39.6-percent.

 

Oakwood held the rebounding advantage 29-28 despite having a substantial size advantage.
