Maroa-Forsyth could not hold on to a late lead and fell to Champaign St. Thomas More 48-45 from Monticello at the Illini Prairie/Sangamo Conference shootout Saturday afternoon.
A Coby Lane three with 2:24 to play gave the Trojans a 43-41 lead but the Sabres finished the game on a 7-2 run to close the game out.
Maroa-Forsyth had a couple of chances in the final seconds but came up short.
The Trojans had to come back in the fourth quarter. Trailing 36-29 after three, Maroa-Forsyth went on an 11-3 run to start the frame after Mitch Williams hit a pair of free throws with 3:44 left.
Williams was the only player to reach double figures for Maroa-Forsyth with 10 points.
Peace Bumba led a trio of Sabres in double figures with 16 points. Andrew Tay added 12 points and Owen Yeager scored 11.
Each team shot well. The Trojans shot 48.7 percent to STMs 47.4 percent. Each team made four three-pointers, shooting under 25 percent from distance.
The Trojans held the advantage on points in the paint, 28-26 and Maroa-Forsyth turned 13 STM turnovers into 13 points.
The Sabres outrebounded the Trojans 30-18.
There were seven ties and five lead changes for the game.
STM is 17-8 overall while Maroa-Forsyth drops to 15-10.
Maroa-Forsyt travels to Williamsville on Tuesday.
