Search Leads Peoria Police To Historic Find

The search for a robbery suspect in Peoria led police to an underground tunnel that a church apparently once used to harbor runaway slaves.

Police were searching for the suspect Monday night when an officer uncovered a partially closed entrance to a tunnel. The officer crawled through the tunnel and found the suspect, who was arrested.

Landlord Mark Monroe says he knew about the tunnel when he took over the building five years ago. Monroe says he was told it connected to a neighboring home and then to a church down the road. Monroe says "the church used it to hide slaves."
