Two new laws aim to keep pharmaceuticals out of the hands of kids and out of the environment.  The first law creates a pharmaceutical collection and disposal program to ensure safe disposal of excess prescription medication. The legislation began as an initiative of students from Pontiac and Antioch High Schools, both of which have been active in efforts to collect and properly dispose of unused pharmaceuticals. The program is designed as a joint effort between communities, local pharmacies, police departments, hospitals and others to educate the public about the abuse of pharmaceuticals, as well as their impact on the environment.  A second bill signed into law allows additional locations for pharmaceuticals to be dropped off at and disposed of properly, such as a police station or local pharmacy.  The laws go into effect January 1, 2012.
