Man Hit By Train Will Be Cremated

A homeless man who was killed by a train in Springfield will be cremated.  Paul Soenksen suffered severe head and chest injuries after being struck by an Amtrak train on Saturday morning.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  Soenksen didn't leave any money behind to take care of a funeral or burial, so a family member stepped in to pay for cremation.  In the past, families could receive support to pay for funeral expenses but the state cut funding for the program by nearly eleven-million dollars, from 12-point-six to just one-point-nine-million dollars.  A spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Human Services says funds for this year are already gone.  Authorities say they are still investigating the accident.
