The University of Illinois has added a player at what might be its weakest spot with its lone scholarship available for next school year.
Coach Bruce Weber says 6-2 point guard Michael Orris from Crete-Monee in suburban Chicago committed to the Illini on national signing day Wednesday.
Orris is a 180-pound senior who averaged 10.2 points, 6.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds his junior year.
Weber calls Orris a winner and a tough, cerebral player. He notes Orris led Crete-Monee to something the school had never had before, a sectional championship.
Orris will join a young roster. Illinois will start its season Friday against Loyola with six freshmen.
They include point guard Tracy Abrams who Weber says is progressing surprisingly fast.
