Jury Award 3 Million Dollars in Knee Replacement Case

A jury in central Illinois has awarded a woman around $3 million over what attorneys say was a botched knee replacement surgery.

A jury deliberated for nearly four hours Tuesday before ruling that Carla Barnwell should receive the money for medical bills and pain and suffering.

Attorneys say an orthopedic surgeon at Carle Clinic Association in Urbana performed a 2007 partial knee replacement surgery on Barnwell. However, they say a piece of metal was put in at a bad angle.

Barnwell claimed she couldn't straight her leg for weeks following the surgery and had two more surgeries to regain normal function.

Carle spokeswoman Jennifer Hendricks Kaufmann says she didn't agree with the decision.

She says the doctor no longer works at the association.
