Red Cross Seek Nominations For Heartland Heroes Awards

The Mid-Illinois Chapter of the Red Cross is seeking nominations for several awards they have, and time to get those nominations in is quickly running short.

The Mid Illinois Chapter of the Red Cross serves Macon, Moultrie, DeWitt and Shelby Counties. For the past three years they have recognized citizens and military personnel that demonstrate unselfish acts of kindness and bravery through their Heartland Heroes program. Tara Winter, Director of Public Support of the American Red Cross says they are seeking nominations for anyone from young people to senior citizens to military personnel to recognize for the program again this year.

The senior award is a new addition to the awards ceremony this year.

Winter feels far too often the negative events in a community overshadow what positive things are happening, and that is the goal of the awards.

Executive Director at the American Red Cross Carl Baker believes each year the recipient of the Military award is very much deserving of the award. He says they go all out to tell the stories and recognize those who have served in the military.

In order to be considered for an award you are nominating, the event must have occurred in DeWitt, Macon, Moultrie or Shelby counties or the person must be from the four county region. Nominations are due Feb. 3. Nominees will be judged by an independent committee of community leaders in mid February. Winners will be recognized at the Heartland Heroes Dinner on Friday, April 20. You can visit midillinoisredcross.org to nominate someone.

The 2012 Heartland Heroes Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2012, at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. Debi Meeds will be the special speaker for the event. Meeds is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Southern Missouri Region, covering 40 counties in southern Missouri.
