Clinton Fire Department Seeking To Take Advantage of Old Sheriff's Equipment

The Clinton Fire Department is seeking to take advantage of some old technology used by the DeWitt County Sheriff's Department.

Fire Departments around DeWitt County are receiving the old transmitters through a donation from the Sheriff's Department. The transmitters are from the "Narrowband Compliance" update the DeWitt County Sheriff's department had to go through late last year. Assistant Fire Chief Raymond James explains these transmitters would greatly improve the departments communications.

According to James, the Fire Department currently has problems communicating with dispatch when they are near the Power Plant. He explains adding the old transmitters and independently purchasing a few new ones will greatly improve their communication in that area of the county, which will also be safer for them.

These upgrades were unexpected and un-budgeted costs the Fire Department recently has come across. Because the purchase is over $500, the Clinton City Council has to approve the purchase, however, Mayor Carolyn Peters was hesitant to grant the Department the purchase because the city is dipping into their reserves for purchases now, so she respectfully asked the department to look into their budget to identify different areas of their budget for the funds could come from.

The City Council will vote on the purchases next Monday evening.

(Corrected version of the story to clarify the Sheriff's Department is donating the equipment, We apologize for the error.)
