Sages Escape Prairie Central

The Monticello Sages escaped a late fourth quarter surge by Prairie Central, and escape the Hawks by a final score of 54-49 Monday night at Tuscola High School.  The Sages led 27-20 at the half, and used a 5-0 run out of the break to grab their biggest lead of the game at 32-20, however, they went nearly 6 minutes after a Matt Kruse 3-point play without a field goal, and the only points during that stretch was two Nick Stokowski free throws. The FG drought ended with a Ryan Donahue layup. Prairie Central struggled just as much, going over five and a half minutes into the third quarter before recording their first points. They would get within four at 32-28.

In the 4th, A three pointer by Lane Maurer with just under a minute in regulation to play tied the game at 49, but on the ensuing possession, Stokowski was fouled and made two crucial free throws to give the Sages the lead for good. Stokowski would add two more free throws to put the game out of reach at 54-49 with 2-seconds remaining.

The Sages were led by Stokowski and Ryan Donahue with 13 points. Stokowski added 12 rebounds as well for the Sages. Daily O'Brien was the only other scorer in double figures with 11 points. The Hawks season comes to an end.

The Sages have a third and final opportunity this season to beat Tolono-Unity Wednesday night at 6 pm. Unity is the #1 seed in the Tuscola Regional.
