Synthetic Drug Bust In Peoria

An undercover drug sting netted nearly 700 packages of synthetic drugs in Peoria yesterday.  Thirteen stores in the area were targeted for compliance in the "Operation Smoke Out" raid.  Three were selling the products and all of them voluntarily handed the drugs over to authorities.  Synthetic drugs are banned in Illinois but manufacturers continue to find ways to skirt the law.  Smoke shops, gas stations, and convenience stores continue to market potpouri, bath salts, and fake marijuana to Illinois youth.  Attorney General Lisa Madigan is leading the charge to get the drugs off store shelves.  She says the drugs are deceiving because kids don't know what they're getting into.  Lawmakers have introduced a new bill in Springfield to help prevent manufacturers from coming up with new ways to get around the law.  It seeks to outlaw all mixtures of the chemicals that make up the drugs.
