Grade Schoolers To Take Part In Annual 'Health Jam'

Clinton 4th graders will be taking part Tuesday in what is becoming a successful annual event.

The third annual 4-H Health Jam is Tuesday. The Dr. John Warner Hospital and the Clinton YMCA will help host the events and promote activity and good health to the Clinton School district's 4th graders. Sherry Fulton, 4-H Youth Development Educator with the DeWitt County University of Illinois Extension explains the event is a two day event in which the nearly 180 students will take part in a variety of activities at the Clinton 'Y' and then will head to the DJWH and learn about a variety of things there.

Since the consolidation of the Macon and Piatt County University of Illionis Extension Office's last year, Fulton will be introducing the program to the 5th students in Monticello. They will be teaming up with Kirby Medical Center and the 4-H Memorial Camp at Allerton Park. Their program will take place at the end of April.

With over 300 students set to take part in the program, Fulton feels the program can have a great impact on students. She explains 4th-5th grade is an age where kids can be impacted by the things they learn and she feels it's also an age where they start to become more aware of their health and the physical condition of their bodies.

Fulton says there is a real problem with childhood obesity and this is a great program for young kids to understand why they should stay active and be healthy, and learn ways to do so.

The students will return to classes Thursday and discuss what they learned.
