Clinton City Council Votes Down Parking Ordinance

The Clinton City Council has voted down an ordinance to eliminate all parking meters in the downtown area in Clinton.

width=The City Council voted on the measure Monday. Commissioner John Wise says he was not in favor of the ordinance when it was first proposed and his mind was not changed from a meeting a few weeks ago until now. He feels if it did not work once before, then it would not work again.

Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements, Nan Crang was willing to give it a try. She explains she is hopeful the Magill home will continue to progress and potentially getting a developer into the building. She says if it does not work, they can repeal it in August.

Commissioner Tom Edmunds was not in favor of the ordinance either. He feels there are too many areas around the square where traffic needs to move, and to do away with time limits would bring tenants or business employees parking in those places slowing things down.

The ordinance failed 3-2. Now the Council faces bringing downtown business owners together to come up with another solution. An initial meeting was held later in March, which was where the original ordinance to eliminate parking time limits came from.
