Reading Buddies Seeking Volunteers

DeWitt County's RSVP program is in need of volunteers for one of their upcoming summer programs.

RSVP's Reading Buddies program is a program aimed at helping young children who may struggle with reading, and through the summer work with them to maintain the reading level they leave school with. Volunteer Coordinator for RSVP, Silvia Comfort says this a program throughout the DeWitt County Schools. It is in the Clinton School district and in Farmer City.

Comfort explains the program was started by a group of parents concerned with their children's reading level, who then approached RSVP to gather volunteer to support to help their kids, and now RSVP has taken it over to help those other kids who struggle with reading. Comfort notes the program also maintains a relationship with the kids' teachers to find out what they are seeing the child struggling with.

Comfort says the program gets rave reviews from the teachers and parents to watch their kids improve their reading levels, but she says from a volunteer standpoint, they enjoy watching the child begin to understand what they are reading and find relevance to reality or even their lives.
